The BBC set their own billboards on fire!

BBC recently launched TV show A Perfect Planet, narrated by David Attenborough. Like all these shows it was eye-opening to watch. In this particular series Attenborough highlights the fact that humans are destroying the planet more and more. The BBC creative team had to launch a campaign promoting the series. Michael Tsim (Creative at BBC) states that 'the BBC wanted it to be a bigger campaign focusing on climate change.' This is a bold move from the BBC, but a movement which can make difference, if they do it well. The BBC have realised that they need to push the public to make a difference if they want popular shows like A Perfect Planet to continue. These shows normally wow viewers with their incredible nature. However this time they needed to portray that the World won't always look like this. But how would the BBC show this in a campaign? They started with the simple cute animal posters, along with a short trailer. These posters were simple, but did the job. However theres a twist, at then end of the series the poster were hijacked and ripped. This was to represent what humans are doing to the planet. I thought this was such a creative idea from the team at BBC. They have turned something so simple into a meaningful, strong campaign, which also brings across a moving message. After reading an article in The Drum, I found that the BBC did struggle a little with what imagery would work best for this, but the outcome is impactful. They have created interactive billboards before, one example being, the Dracula billboard. However, nothing quite compares to setting your own billboard on fire! Creative director James Cross says that, ' our strategy is to make huge noise around one site.' This campaign did just that. The creative team at BBC had to push quite a bit to get this campaign to run, but a full risk assessment was completed and they were all set. BBC did really go BIG with this, lets see if the general public listen.
